Frederich was born on 27 nov 1823 in Fallingbostel. Kingdom of Hanover, Niedersachsen, Germany to Thomas Heinrich Von Hofe. ..we believe. He had 2 other possible siblings, Catherine Anna b. 1810 in Adolphheide, Fallingbostel, Hannover, Germany, according to an online tree and a brother, Heinrich Thomas, a tailor, b. 6 May 1817 m. Wilhemina Bertha Wolf b. 1819 in Leipzig.
Not much more is known until his marriage to Anna “Marie” Bastian.
The 1860 US census lists Frederich “fenhoff” 37 yr. old, carpenter, born in Hanover in the 3rd district of the 17th Ward of NYC with his wife, “Mary” who is also 37, born in Hanover. Son John is 3 and George is 7 months.
The family lived in Ward 12, District 2 house number 122, NY NY during the 1870 US census. Fred and his wife “Ann” are both 46. The children are: John, 13, George, 10, Henry, 7, and Emma is 4.
Fred was 58 years old during the 1880 US Census. He’s still a carpenter living at 120 East 88th St. (Lexington). His wife is now listed as Annie, 57 years old. John Godfrey is 23 years old and is a Comedian. George, 21, is a printer. Henry, 19, is a grocery clerk. Emma is 15.
In 1895 Fred sold the parcel of land next door to the Immauel Lutheran Church for $17K.
Fred died on 28 Oct 1890. His last residence was listed as 120 E. 88 St., Manhattan, New York.
He was buried on 31 October in Woodlawn Cemetery Lot: N Part 3674, Sec. 17, Forest Plot. The inscription translates, according to google translate: you’re here. and count and read what you are I have been. what I am, you have to become, we are nothing but dust and earth. Amen.
On the 1891 NYC Directory, Mary is listed as a widow of Fred, living still on E. 88th St.
Mary continued living in her home until her death on 20 Jan 1902. She is buried beside Fred in Woodlawn. Her son, Heinrich died on 11 Oct 1902. His last address is listed as Amityville, LI. He was buried on the 14 Oct. beside his parents.
