The Held family, according to House of Names, originated in Silesia, Germany. On the map, Silesia pre 1742 is outlined in cyan, from 1815 is outlined in yellow (from Wikipedia). No wonder so many relatives ancestors (DNA-wise) hail from Poland!
The Held name is topographical, and means one who lived on a hillside, from the pre-7th century Old English, helde, or hylde, which means the same. In the Middle Ages, these topographical surnames were some of the earliest created.
Wish I had more to tell.
